Over 19 million adults suffer with depression. The classic signs of depression are feelings of being overwhelmed, fatigued, sad, isolated or disconnected. Neurofeedback Therapy is a safe, effective treatment for depression.
Feelings of sadness are normal and healthy, in moderation. However, when these feeling become persistent and overwhelming they can adversely affect our everyday life, leading to depression. Depression impacts our health, our relationships with loved ones and co-workers, our feelings of self worth and can spiral out of control as we close ourselves off from those we love and the world we know.
Thousands of brain mappings, (Quantitative Electroencephalograph’s or QEEG’s), have shown that people suffering from depression experience abnormal shifts in healthy brain wave location as well as abnormally low magnitudes of Delta and Theta brain waves. Neurofeedback training restores these waves to normal levels and locations improving mood and behavior.
Depression may have multiple causes; genetics, brain trauma, abnormal brain chemistry, lifestyle excesses, environment damage or emotional trauma and are amplified by the role that stress plays in exacerbating these elements. All of these factors affect the brain. Consistently those individuals with depression demonstrate low levels of brain wave activity in the parietal and occipital lobes of the brain. These changes subdue our good mood and happiness.
Neurofeedback trains the brain to increase Delta and Theta wave activity in the posterior brain lobes. As these levels become more normal, individuals begin to feel more positive in their moods. The abnormal brainwave activity diminishes over a period of training sessions improving brainwave patterns. When function is improved, mood is improved.
In 2014 the British Medical Journal published a study finding that using benzodiazapines for three months or more increased the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s by 32% and taking them for six months or more by 84%! Published in the Archives of General Psychiatry in 2011, Dr. B.C. Ho and colleagues demonstrated actual brain shrinkage with prolonged benzodiazepines use! Xanax, Librium, Klonopin, Tranxene, Valium, ProSom, Dalmane, Ativan, Serax, Restoril, Halcion and Doral are all benzodiazapines. Other researched have demonstrated more bouts of severe depression with prolonged SSRI use.
