“Neurofeedback Therapy has been proven to improve the lives of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Cognitive, physical and emotional impairments can improve with neurofeedback training.” Dr. Calvin Hargis
Traumatic brain injury patients struggle in their daily lives with an array of cognitive and behavioral issues stemming from the injury.
Neurofeedback Therapy measures brain function with a quantitative EEG brain map to identify the areas of the brain that have been negatively impacted by the injury. Once they are identified, the areas are targeted through neurofeedback brain training. We re-teach the brainwaves so that the affected functions of the brain can improve and alleviate the symptoms.
I first saw Michael in the fall of 2014. Brought by his fiancee he has fallen from an MTA platform striking his skull on a steel rail suffering severe brain damage. Following removal of skull fragments he had been in a coma for months and now two years later had no short term memory. In other words he had no memory of events after only a few minutes. He had been told by his doctors that he would never change. In Neurofeedback Therapy patients watch a movie of their choosing and change movies regularly. For the first six weeks of twice weekly therapy, Michael brought in the same movie each session because he couldn't remember he had seen it! In week seven and thereafter he began to change the movies as his memory improved. Following eight months of therapy he could remember back three days, hold a normal conversation and take public transportation from Beacon into the city and back unattended!
Stella saw me after a stroke. Always as 'sharp as a tack', she had become saddened and forgetful. Neurofeedback changed all that, returning her clarity and happiness.
Ann was a senior pilot who had stopped flying because her balance was so poor she had to hold onto objects and stair railings as she walked. On her first visit to the office she fell in the neurofeedback suite! After three months of therapy she regained her balance and was able to master stairs without holding on.
Neurofeedback Therapy allows the brain to re-establish neural pathways and build new brain mass. These changes have been well documented by sophisticated technologies like Computerized Pet Scans. Studies have shown that neurofeedback is effective in managing many neurological conditions including certain types of memory loss.
